Okay, Bejing has it going on!
All I can say about the Olympic opening ceremony is WOW! Who knew what Bejing was capable of? Let that be a lesson, never under estimate anyone. I do have two questions...what are they planning to do for the closing ceremony and what's the poor person who is in charge of 2012 Olympic opening ceremony thinking? I wouldn't want to be in their shoes. More blog stuff later...got to get cooking for hubby's birthday tomorrow. For some reason he wants fried chicken and apple pie. I've really never made fried chicken. We'll see how this adventure turns out.

The Olympics start today!
The Olympics always sneak up on me. Of course I am not one of the competing athletes who has spent countless hours training for a split second of fame. There are always my favorite competitors and competitions. I never tire of watching the gymnasts and the kayakers. This year I vow to plan ahead and use the DVR.
My question this year is whose bright idea was it to let China host the Olympics? I know Bejing promised that their factories would shut down way ahead of time so that the air would be breathable but they lied. Watching the news commentators yesterday against a backdrop of Bejing smog made me want to cry. I can't comprehend competing in that air quality. Shouldn't someone say just say NO?
I would imagine that it will bring a new element to the arena, there may even be a silver lining in the form of conciousness. The viewing world may gain a new level of awareness around how polluted our global environment actually is. One may actually take it one step further and bring it home...asking themselves the question, "What can I do to minimize my carbon footprint?"
It actually feels like we are in the midst of a priority shift. There seems to be an undercurrent in the media regarding topics. I notice that the politicians seem to be talking less about the war in Iraq and a bit more about America's need to go green. My hunch is that the Bejing air quality may cough up some new momnetum in that direction but let's not forget about our troops and their families, even though you many not agree with the war, they still need our support and prayers. This you tube video by 15 year old Lizzie Palmer says it all...
